Tropical Storm Helene Set to Intensify Into Major Hurricane, Threatens Gulf Coast

CONCLUSION

Tropical Storm Helene is rapidly intensifying and is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane, making landfall along the Gulf Coast later this week. Areas across Cuba, Mexico, and nearly the entire Gulf Coast of Florida are under tropical storm warnings and hurricane watches as the storm gathers strength.

Latest projections

Fueling Helene’s rapid growth is the record-warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is projected to accelerate toward the Eastern Gulf Coast, with strong winds reaching the Florida Panhandle by Thursday morning. The latest forecast shows Tallahassee directly in the storm’s path, with impacts spreading as far inland as Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and parts of the Midwest by the weekend.

As of early Wednesday morning, Helene was about 65 miles east of Cozumel, Mexico, packing sustained winds of 60 mph and moving northwest at 10 mph. While it is expected to weaken after making landfall, tropical storm-force winds could still impact inland areas, including the Carolinas, as the storm moves through.

Dangerous storm surges are also a major concern, particularly along the Gulf Coast between Panama City and Tampa, where surges of 10 to 15 feet are expected. The area between the Ochlockonee River and Chassahowitzka could see surges as high as 10 feet, while the Tampa Bay area is forecast to experience 5 to 8 feet of storm surge.
